The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
