A recent study reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
